Data transport and RPC protocols

OpenConfig data models can be used independently of the data encoding, transport, or RPC protocol. Operators can choose the transport and RPC protocols that are best suited for integration with their environments and overall automation strategy. Below we list some of the protocols currently used by OpenConfig participants.

NETCONF and RESTCONF

NETCONF and RESTCONF are IETF standard protocols designed for manipulating network configuration data in datastores modeled with YANG.

gNMI - gRPC Network Management Interface

gNMI is a unified management protocol for streaming telemetry and configuration management that leverages the open source gRPC framework.
